What is Dairy farming ?

Dairy farming is a type of agriculture which is mainly based on producing milk and its products such as butter, cheese, paneer, curd, yogurt etc. for human welfare. 

Advantages of this farming

● It is considered as safe and eco-friendly business which isn't involved in causing environmental pollution at all.


● Unlike other businesses it doesn't require skilled labours.


● Along with all this there is less requirement of energy as the biogas plant can supply maximum energy to meet farm requirements.

How to start dairy farming in Jammu and Kashmir-



●Some initiators belongs to a family where they have already learnt so much about the different activities involved in dairy management from their parents and grandparents.


● Such people can easily start this farming by ensuring the availability of land which is away from any residential area and water bodies.


● As we know that temperature in J&K general Kasmhir area is usually between 4°C to 18°C therefore one should choose a cattle breed which can withstand low temperature. Generally cross-breed Jerseys ( smallest cows of the dairy breeds), cross-breed Holstein Friesian, Nili-Ravi and Kashmiri cattle are best suited with the climate of J&K.


● Under Indian condition a commercial dairy farm should consists of minimum 20 animals ( 10 cows, 10 buffalos). One can also go for a loan from J&K Grameen bank after knowing the requirements and conditions.

 
Management Required for a Dairy Farming


● The shed of the cattles should be made with mud so that it can keep their shelter warm.


● It is advised to keep in touch with veterinarians as they are responsible for herd care. Treatments and modifications including injections, vaccinations etc. are also performed by them. Along with artificial insemination veterinarians also make house-calls in an emergency case to care for sick cows.

● One should have an appropriate knowledge about the diet plans of the cattle as with good body condition, a clean dry shelter, fresh water and good nutrition dairy cattle can tolerate temperatures well below zero. 


● There housing should be done properly as climatic changes can disturb their fertility and production.

Things to keep in mind


● For proper production and benefits one should manage a good team of labourers preferably with some experience.


● You may really make a huge profit from it by selling your dairy products in your own locality and exporting them in your nearby states through various means.


● choose the breed wisely according to your climatic conditions and demand of the people. For sure your herd size will increase automatically along with your profit.
