New Delhi: Twitter, Facebook and others have yet to fully comply with government guidelines.
The deadline for compliance with the new legal rules for social media, released by the government three months ago, expires on Tuesday, threatening the operation of favorites such as Twitter in India.
According to top official sources, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and others, which were required to comply with the rules announced in the Indian Gazette on February 25 under the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021, have failed to comply with most accounts so far.
Government regulations will come into effect from May 26.
"If the telecommunications companies do not follow the rules, they may lose their position and protection as mediators and may be liable to commit crimes under the existing laws of India," said senior official sources.

With the exception of the Indian telecommunications company, Koo, sources said none of the senior communications mediators had appointed a resident grievance officer, a senior law enforcement officer and a well-respected contact person.
Sources said the failure of telecommunications companies to do so for three months did not bode well for the government.
With the unreasonable suspension of accounts and inactivity due to harassment and discrimination on social media, Indian users have been complaining about the opposition to resources such as Twitter, Facebook and others.
In a recent congressional hearing over the incident, Delhi police visited local Twitter offices in the National Capital Region region on Monday after Twitter posted one of the tweets BJP spokesman Sambit Patra "as a fraudulent media".
Twitter's arrogant has caused widespread outrage among Indian users across the country.
Sources said the forums that were supposed to provide monthly reports on how many complaints had been resolved, had failed to do so. Some platforms, sources say, require an extended period of up to six months to provide compliance.
On some platforms, sources said, the most common response was that they would wait for instructions from their company headquarters in the US, they themselves would have a "professional test" to watch.
American communication platforms have grown exponentially, thanks to their large users and profitable revenue from democracies like India. However, no platforms have shown any tendency to comply with Indian domestic laws. Instead, social media has declined to comment on their approach to the facts and their tweets.
