J&K Police seized 52kg heroin packets worth Rs 100 cr from a truck at Suketar-Jhajjar Kotli in Jammu
Jammu: Jammu Kashmir Police Continuing its drive against the drug/narcotics smugglers, J&K Police achieved a major success on Thursday with the arrest of one person and seized 52 kilograms of heroin worth Rs 100 Crore during a naka checking at Jhajjar Kotli of Jammu district, a senior police official said.
Initial investigation suggests that the contraband was being smuggled into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan to fund terrorism in the Valley.
“Based on specific information, Station House Officer (SHO) of Jhajjar Kotli Devender Singh set up checkpoints for the search of vehicles on a highway," ADGP, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh said addressing a press conference late Thursday evening.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh was also present.
Sharing details about the catch, ADGP Mr Singh said a truck (HR73/2226) on its way to Punjab from Srinagar jumped at checkpoint Suketar of Jhajjar Kotli and tried to speed up but was alert police team intercepted it.
“However, the driver of the truck managed to escape, the police official said.
During the search of the abandoned truck, police seized 52 kilogram of heroin worth Rs 100 crore in the international market, he said, adding, “the contraband which was concealed in a cavity of the truck.”
“But co-driver, identified as Bharat Kumar of Haryana was arrested on the spot, senior police officer added.
“Packets containing heroin have 1999 markings, which points towards its smuggling into J&K from Pakistan to fund terrorism, he said.
“Earlier seizures of heroin had similar markings as well", ADGP Mr Singh added.
Senior Police officer said, “During initial investigation, it came to the fore that the consignment of heroin was being smuggled to Punjab from Srinagar in Kashmir.”
“The preliminary investigation hints that drugs have been supplied from across the border and were meant for sale in the hinterland of the state of Punjab.”
He said, “The Narco-terror link cannot be ruled out at the stage, all the necessary measures/ analysis shall be done so as to unearth the backward as well as the forward links so as to put all the culprits behind the bars.”
He said that a case under FIR No 181/2021 u/s 8/21/22/25/29 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Jhajjar Kotli.
Giving further information, Mukesh Singh said police have seized 185 kilogram of heroin worth Rs 360 crore in the past two years in the Jammu region, besides 500 kilogram of cannabis and 2,500 kilograms of poppy.
He said 1,500 persons have been arrested in connection with narcotics smuggling and 1,200 cases have been registered during the period.
