Sheikh Abdullah’s picture replaced with National Emblem of India on police gallantry medal

 

 

Jammu: On Monday, the J&K administration ordered replacement of 'Sher-i-Kashmir (Sheikh Mohd Abdullah)' on police medal for Gallantry and meritorious service. The authorities have asked the National Emblem of India to be embossed on the medal.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered replacing Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah embossed on one side of the police gallantry medal with the National Emblem of India.

An order by RK Goyal, principal secretary in home department, read, “It is hereby ordered that in modification to the Para 4 of the Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal Scheme, the Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah embossed on one side of the medal shall be replaced with "The National Emblem of Government of India”.

 

 

 

“The other side inscribed with the J&K State Emblem shall be inscribed as "Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry" and "Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Meritorious Service' in case of  Gallantry/Meritorious Medal, as the case may be,” the statement adds.

 

 

It is important to mention here that earlier, in January 2020, the J&K administration had changed the nomenclature of police medal for gallantry and police medal for meritorious service by dropping the word 'Sher-i-Kashmir' from the titles of the awards. 'Sher-I-Kashmir' was a reference to National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. It was dropped from the title of the J&K police medal months after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in August 2019.
