1 Girls' Hostel Video Leaked, Not Many: Chandigarh University Amid Protest
Police have registered an FIR in the matter and the accused girl has been arrested.

A private university in Chandigarh on Sunday denied claims that dozens of obscene videos of hostel girls were leaked, saying only one student had shared a video of herself. The police have registered a case and the girl has been arrested.

In a statement released by Chandigarh University, Pro-Chancellor Dr. RS Bawa said, "The rumour which is circulating through media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students... is totally false and baseless... no videos found of any student which are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which was shared by herself to her boyfriend."

The police also backed the claim. "So far in our investigation, we have found out that there is only one video of the accused herself. She has not recorded any other video of anyone else," Mohali police chief Vivek Soni said, news agency ANI reported. The girl has been arrested on charges of voyeurism and sections of the IT Act, the police added.

Protests had erupted on the campus over rumours that multiple videos of several women students were recorded and leaked by the student.

The police and the university's administration have rubbished social media posts claiming that several girls attempted by suicide after their videos leaked. "One student who was taken in an ambulance was suffering from anxiety and our team is in contact with her," Mr Soni said.

The police have also sent a team to Himachal Pradesh to look for a man. "A man from Shimla is known to the accused girl. Only after he is caught, more details will be known. Forensic probe of her mobile phone will be conducted," said senior police officer Gurpreet Kaur Deo.

Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati has said that an investigation into the matter is underway. "This is a serious matter, an investigation is underway. I am here to assure parents of all students that the accused won't be spared," she said.

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister and chief of the Aam Aadmi Party that rules Punjab, has termed the incident "shameful" and called for patience. "In Chandigarh University, a girl has gone viral by recording objectionable videos of many girl students... We are all with you. All act with patience," Mr Kejriwal said in a tweet.

From the Opposition Congress, senior party leader Pawan Khera has appealed to people to not share the leaked video. "To all responsible Indians, please do not repost, forward or share any MMS/video of the #chandigarhuniversity horror. Let us be a digitally responsible society," he tweeted.
