A passport is a mandatory travel document for travelling abroad. Whether it is for education, pilgrimage, tourism, business purpose, medical attendance or family visits, a person needs to have the official international travel document issued by a government of India.
Foreign travel from India in the last several years have increased by a large margin and that has led to the rising demand for passport-related services. To meet the increased demand, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) launched the Passport Seva Project (PSP) in May 2010. Passport Seva has simplified the process of applying for and issuing passports and related services. The process of applying for a passport online includes filling out documents and physical verification by the State police. The document is also posted directly at the official address of the applicant.

How to apply for passport online
- Step 1: Visit to Passport Seva Online Portal passportindia.gov.in.
- Step 2: Register to the portal by click on the "Register Now" link on the home screen.
Step 3: After registration, Login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with the registered Login ID.
Step 4: Now click on the "Apply" button to apply for a Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.
- Step 5: Fill in all required details in the form and enter submit.
- Step 6: You will see the option of View Saved/Submitted Applications, open it.
- Step 7: Now click on the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link to pay the minimum charges for the service.
Note: Online payment has been made mandatory for booking appointments at all PSK/POPSK/PO. The regular application fee is Rs 1,500 while for the Tatkal passport, the application fee is Rs 2,000.
- Step 8: After paying the fee via net banking or another available option, click on the "Print Application Receipt" link to print your transaction receipt.
- Step 9: You will also receive an SMS with the appointment details after the filing of your application. This message will be needed to show as proof at the Passport Office.
- Step 10: You will have to visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO) on the appointment date with all the original documents you submitted during the application.
